There is only one true species of bass in Utah, the White Bass. Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass are actually members of the closely related sunfish family.

• The dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins have spines.
• The scales are ctenoid, with comb-like projections on their exposed surfaces.
